How are we as God’s children to wield authority? I mean, God did command us to rule and reign in Genesis 1:28. We learned through the disciples’ mistakes that it’s not through forced occupation.

So maybe it’s a formula? If we pray all the right prayers, make all the correct declarations and we will see God’s kingdom come. Right? How many of you have tried that and failed? Definitely me! I believe Jesus was clear in showing that taking dominion looks like love.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 (NIV)

We must first let God’s love transform our mind, and then our lives. For me this looks like letting God shine light on those areas of my life where fear is reigning and in prayer, imagine what it would have looked like if I felt fully loved in that same situation. (Romans 12:1-2)

One day as I was walking through my “mid-renovation home” telling the Lord how thankful I was for the still chipped cement floors and then for the newly renovated bathroom and then for my newly carpeted and painted bedroom. I then told Him how excited I was to see how the other rooms to be renovated were going to turn out. As I was standing there, hands raised full of gratitude, He whispered with a wink, “You know you’re just like this house?” “Huh?” I inquired. He said, “You know those rooms in your heart that aren’t renovated yet that you sometimes lament over? I have no thought of disappointment or frustration that they aren’t finished. I just have a joyful anticipation for when we get to renovate them someday. Just like this house.” Then He asked me, “Can you love yourself like that?”

As I settled into the transformation in agreement with His request, I felt my whole being settle into who I am in Christ.

The next thing He whispered to me the following day when I was tempted to shrink back was,

“Now take your space.”

We are to reign over the earth: be the one who influences, molds and shapes it. Just as a King or Queen would who loves their subjects and care for them and their surroundings. They would make decrees and put things in place that would bless and expand their people and their kingdom.

Matthew 28:18 (NLT): “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.”

Romans 8:17: “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

So if we are co-heirs with Christ who has all authority and we are seated in heavenly places in Christ, how do we exercise that God given authority?

  • Take ownership of it.
  • Let God’s love fill you.
  • Let God’s love expand your heart and then pray/decree his kingdom into your realm of influence.
